Sunday the 28^th of September 2008 saw sixteen Farnham Ramblers descend on Church Stretton. The Long Myndd Hotel to be exact, which can be seen on the hill overlooking the town as you approach along the A49 from Craven Arms.

This large hotel caters for walkers and has a drying room and allowed one of our members to bring a dog. We enjoyed half board and appreciated the good food after a hard day's walk.

We had planned five walking days with two walks each day, a longer walk of 8 to 14 miles and a shorter walk of 6 to 7 miles, this arrangement was kept most days using our own members as leaders. Many areas were walked including the Long Mynd, Carding Mill Valley, Stiperstones, Caer Caradoc etc. We were very impressed with the Shropshire Way now very well waymarked and with lots of new footpath furniture.

On our day off some Ramblers visited Ludlow, others visited Ironbridge with its wealth of Museums. If you appreciate timber- framed period houses, this border area of Shropshire and Herefordshire is the place to visit.

We fully recommend the Shropshire Hills to other RA Groups.

Our official Spring holiday was based in historic Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. We stayed at the Regency House Hotel, three minutes from Abbey Gardens. Farnham was the first rambling group the hotel catered for and they did us proud. The rooms were comfortable, food superb and the staff were so helpful and friendly. The walking programme was assisted by the local Bury group, chaired by Rosie Perham and they hosted us one day from the enchanting village of Lavenham with its 300 listed buildings. Further afield we visited Constable country at Flatford Mill and the last day walked 15 miles along the Lark Valley Path. We enjoyed superb weather (Sheila did her sun dance the week before!) The Bury Festival coincided with our visit, enabling us to enjoy some culture in the form of a Russian ensemble. All acknowledged that they had thoroughly enjoyed their holiday.

Nineteen intrepid walkers from the group have just returned from the Isle of Wight having completed the 72 miles round the coastal path.  Bearing in mind many participants were used to three to five mile walks, we all gave ourselves congratulatory pats on the back!  We achieved from ten to fourteen miles each day, had superb weather and scenery.

The Hambledon Hotel in Shanklin was our base and the mini-bus took us to the start of each day's walk, picking us up at the end of the day.  The hospitality and cooking at the Hambledon is first class A1 and we all had an amazing week. 

Our good wishes to Bill and Jackie for a continuing successful future and to the team of walk leaders.  Last but not least, our thanks to Dudley for organising the holiday and for letting his share his dream.

Farnham ramblers have been on their holidays again!  We stayed at the excellent Yarn Market Hotel in the medieval town of Dunster.  The rooms were comfortable and the variety of food was awesome.  Some of us put on a few pounds!  Dunster is delightful; medieval buildings, thatched cottages, a working water-mill, a church that chimes at different tune every day and delightful shops to ease the coins out of your pocket.

We had two walks each day covering much of the Moor with splendid views, wooded combes and glorious coastline.  Red deer and ponies were sighted.

Evenings were spent in the local hostelries sampling the local brews, playing pool and darts.  We joined in a pub quiz in the next village and enjoyed a skittles evening.  Thanks to Celia for her organisation skills and to Mike for his tracklog skills.  Yet another highly successful holiday.

A group from Farnham Ramblers recently enjoyed a spring break in the Cotswolds.  We stayed at the Mayfield House Hotel in Crudwell.  The staff were attentive and very helpful, rooms were spacious, the food varied and appetising.

Two walks were led each day by our own members, having been mapped out on track-log.  A few difficulties occurred where the paths were on maps, but not in great evidence on the ground! but these 'hiccups' were splendidly overcome.  The group realised that we are very lucky in Surrey and Hampshire with our fingerposts, maintenance and zealous footpath secretaries (Thanks John!)

This part of the Cotswolds is beautiful and Farnham group thoroughly recommend the area and the hotel.

Forty members of the group recently enjoyed a week walking in the beautiful Peak District.  We stayed at the Buckingham Hotel in Buxton; the accommodation was comfortable and the food delicious.

Three to four walks were led each day, either by local people or members of the group.  The walks ranged from serene dales to challenging high peaks and moors.  Two groups braved Kinder Scout experiencing the upward spray from Kinder Down!

The 'off day' gave us time to sample the vast variety of sights to be seen in the area - Chatsworth House being a favourite.  Buxton Opera House provided evenings of enjoyment and the week passed all too quickly.

The success of the week was entirely due to the massive amount of planning and work that Margaret, our chairman put into the event.  We were also extremely fortunate to have John McQuinn - a native of Buxton - to organise all the walks for us and provide a great amount of literature to help the walk leaders.  A huge 'thank you' to Margaret and John for all their hard work.  They will be a hard act to follow!
